iRODS
The basis of the RDMS is iRODS. iRODS is designed as an archiving system for large amounts of data. With the metadata that is attached to the data, multiple extra options are made possible like data retrieval, automation and storage management.
iRODS is maintained in a consortium and it is open source. Members of the consortium are among others Bayer, Welcome Sanger Institute, FuJi film.
In the Netherlands there are multiple universities that are members of the consortium. They offer services based on iRODS to store and archive research data. In Utrecht Yoda was developed. Yoda is now in use in Utrecht University and at the Wageningen University. Also Surf hosts iRODS as a service to other universities.
At the UG we also offer iRods to our researchers. By build iRODS is accessible from the command line on a Linux platform. For users from Windows or Mac we have build a web interface to the iRODS system that allows users interact with the system via a graphical user interface in a browser. This is the RDMS WebApp.
