Data management in the RDMS

Data can be uploaded or downloaded from the RDMS in multiple ways. In the RDMS WebApp you can upload one file at the time, but for multiple files it is easier to use other applications. In this overview of clients to the RDMS, the login details and settings are provided.

N.B. Only staff with a personal numbers (P-number) can log in to the RDMS directly. Please contact us if other UG accounts (student (S) or functional (F) accounts need access)

Make sure you are in the network of the UG!

The RDMS is only accessible from the RUG network, only with an IP-address from the UG you can log in. On UG premises an Eduroam connection will give you an internal IP-address. With a laptop you can use a VPN connection or one of the virtual desktops of the UG uwp.rug.nl or vLWP.rug.nl.

The Research Data Management system (RDMS) is accessible via the following methods and interfaces.

  • Command-line
Using command-line interface is currently only available to Linux users. In order to login via the command-line you need to create a profile in your home directory. The more advanced Windows users can install WSL2; a virtualization of the Linux kernel in the Windows Operating System. This option is for advanced Windows users who need to upload big files (>100Gb). Have a look at the wiki pages about Data.
  • WebDAV
One can connect to the RDMS using a WebDAV client. There are multiple clients to use for WebDAV; for instance WinSCP, Cyberduck or NextCloud. It is also possible to incorporate the RDMS drive in your file explorer of the operating system that you are running (Windows, MacOS, Linux). To set up such a connection; open your WebDAV client and set the following parameters in the configuration fields.
    • Username is your RUG email address
    • Connect to the server: webdav.data.rug.nl
    • We made separate pages with the instructions about configuring a WebDAV client for Windows, MacOS and Linux.

Please use these server addresses for testing! Data on this server is not secure. In this wiki all other specified addresses refer to the production environment of RDMS; please substitute that address with the test server addresses.
