Kaltura Capture: Recording for Research Interviews
Introduction
The Kaltura Capture program is a widget that you can install on your computer that allows you to record your audio, video, and screen independently. The University of Groningen has made Kaltura Capture available to all users with a UG account. The program itself can be used in a variety of situations, but this guide will focus on what to do and how to use the program to record an interview with a research participant.
Note: If you are using a University Workspace (UWP) machine, you are not able to install software yourself. Kaltura Capture is currently being prepared to be installed on all UWP machines. When you plan your interview, please check its availability on the UWP by following this link.
Why use Kaltura Capture?
Kaltura Capture is in no way a special program. There are many screen, video and/or audio capture programs available online. However, when dealing with sensitive data, you need to be aware of where and how your data is stored. Most programs you find online for free do not provide a clear description of where your data is stored, especially if there is no service agreement attached to your use of the program. Here are some points as to why you might prefer using Kaltura Capture as opposed to another recording program:
- The use of Kaltura Capture has already been approved by the UG.
- Kaltura Capture is available with full functionality to all UG users.
- Data recorded with Kaltura Capture can be safely stored locally.
- You know where your recorded data is and you have full control over it.
- Kaltura Capture allows you to choose what you want to record (data minimization: audio, video, and screen are independent.).
