Current Functionality
A Virtual Research Environment (VRE) is a shared data space for one or more researchers with access to the VRE. These researchers have a Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) connected to that VRE.
The workspace or VDI
The current standard functionality of a VDI to the VRE is a Windows 11 virtual desktop. The home drive includes 1 GB storage and the group drives (G:\ and I:|) have 100 GB free storage space.
| CPU | Memory | |
|---|---|---|
| Basic | 4 vCPU | 8 GB memory |
| Advanced (default) | 8 vCPU, 2 GB vGPU | 16 GB memory |
| Customizations and additions | extra memory and vGPU can be added. | |
| various hard-and software such as servers, Dockers, databases, etc., all fully tailored to the research. | ||
Data drives and rights
Researchers with an account on a VRE will have a Home drive, a Group drive and a Global drive connected to their VDI. The home drive can be used for settings and small documents, but the group drive is dedicated for shared work on the data. Data that must be immutable can be stored on the global drive by a researcher with the role of Controller.
