====== Data Management Tab ====== | ====== Data Management Tab ====== |
The more elaborated data management tasks, as well as the management of RDMS Teams and Projects is done from the so-called "Data Management Tab" which can be found on the left-side panel of the web interface.
| If you want to manage your RDMS Groups, Team Drives, or your Projects, you need to access the Data Management tab in the right sidebar Menu (see screenshot below). If you do not see the data management icon (), then it means that you do not yet have the right permissions to manage Groups, Team Drives, or Projects. If that is the case, please contact rdms-support@rug.nl to request access to it. |

**Note:** This tab is just visible if your account has the correct permissions for that. If you do not see the tab, but needed it for your data management tasks, please contact RDMS-Support | Clicking on the Data Management tab in the Menu will open a browser window, as shown below. This window will allow you to navigate and select Groups, Team Drives, or Projects where you have management permissions. The goal of this section of the RDMS is to manage user permissions and access to Groups, Team Drives, or Projects. If you want to display the data contained in Team Drives or Projects, you can do it from this page as well, but we suggest you use the Data Browser, instead. |
| |
If you hover over or click on the symbol of the data management tab, the web interface will show you an overview with the RDMS Teams, Projects, and Groups that are available to you.

While the Team Drive wiki section already explain the usage of RDMS groups in the context of RDMS Team Drives, the concept of groups can be also used in other storage areas of the system. | In the general context of the RDMS, groups serve to collect RDMS users into one single entity. If you are familiar with Team Drives, there the Team Drive group acts as the user that has the Team Drive as its assigned folder. In that case, the group is in a sense the Team Drive itself. If you delete the group, you delete the Team Drive. In a broader context, Groups serve as a way to collectively manage and assign the same permissions to multiple users in a given RDMS environment. For example, you can grant access to a folder to multiple users by using a group, or you can share files with a group instead of single users. Please see the Sharing Files and Folders section of the Wiki for more info on how to share files and folders in the RDMS. |
| |
In general, groups are a grouping of RDMS users into one single entity. This can be used to, for example, assign/manage permissions for multiple users at the same time. | With this being said, to create a new group in the RDMS, first open the Data Management tab, then select the button, and choose "New Group" from the context menu that opens. |

Afterwards, it will automatically open the user overview about your group. You will also see the newly created group listed on the left side of the data management tabs under "My groups".

==== Removing Group Members ==== | The web portal will automatically open the user overview about your group. Here you can verify that the group is not empty. If you see an empty group, then it means that something failed during the creation process. Please contact rdms-support@rug.nl in such a case. You can also verify that the group has been successfully created by checking if you can see the newly created group listed on the left side of the Data Management tabs under My groups. |

You can also use the button next to a user's name to remove this user from the current group. | Once you start adding group members, this page also gives you an overview of all current RDMS users that are member of the selected group. |

==== Using Groups ==== | ==== Adding and removing Group Members ==== |

Groups can be used to assign permissions in a similar way to normal RDMS users. For example, you can share files/folders with a group instead of single users. Please see the Sharing Files and Folders section of the Wiki for more info on how to share files/folders in the RDMS. | Once you have selected a group in the Data Management tab, you can use the button in the right side of the screen and then select Add Group member to add a new user to your group. If you wish to remove a user from the group, instead, then you can use the button next to a user's name to remove this user from the current group. |
