How to record your meeting

Now that you have planned your meeting/interview, you will want to record it. There are different ways to record an interview using Kaltura Capture. Mainly, you can decide if you want to record everything (screen, camera, and microphone) or if you would like to record only some of the three. Please keep in mind, as we will discuss later in this page, that you should only be recording what you need from the interview. Data minimization is the very first step towards protecting someone's privacy!

What are the different inputs for?

  1. Screen: This will record whatever is shown on your screen during the recording. If you need facial expressions or body language of the person being interviewed, for example, this option needs to be active.
  2. Camera/Video: This will record everything shown by your own camera. If you need your own face to be recorded during the interview, you will want this option to be active.
  3. Microphone/Audio: This will record whatever is spoken into your own microphone. If you want your own voice to be recorded, you will want this option to be active.
  4. System audio: This option can be set in the Settings page of Kaltura Capture. See above for how to do so. This option will record the audio coming from the meeting. If you want the voice of the person interviewed to be recorded, you need to turn this option on.

The following descriptions of the three different cases will assume that System audio is already turned on. We will not point out that you have to turn it on from here on out.

Important: Kaltura Capture can be heavy on your computer memory. Be sure to have RAM available by closing all unnecessary processes, software, and internet tabs BEFORE you start recording. This will ensure proper functionality during the interview.

When you are connected and ready to start your interview, simply click on the big, round, red button of the widget to start. Once again, please double-check that Record system audio is enabled in your Settings.

When the recording starts, a timer will appear at the bottom right of your screen. The figure below shows how to pause and stop the recording. Please notice how you can also activate and deactivate the microphone recording by clicking on its icon. You can also click on the pencil icon to change the recording setting. We do advise, however, to make sure that the recording is set up correctly before you start recording.

When you want to stop your recording, Kaltura Capture will ask you to confirm your choice. If you do, it will stop the recording and automatically open the Library page, where you will be able to see your recording and any other previous recordings you took. By default, your recordings are stored locally, and we suggest you keep them stored locally. There is, however, an upload button that allows you to upload your recording to the Kaltura video platform.

Note: If you decide to upload your recording, you will still have the option to delete it by either:

See the figure below for what to do to delete or upload recordings from Kaltura. Once again, we suggest you store your interviews/recordings locally.

To exit this view and start a new recording, press the red button in the top right: New Recording. This will reopen the view of the widget where you can select what inputs you want to record.
