Depending of the data size and amount of files, we advise different possibilities for files transfer in/out of the RDMS.

Data (Sets) under 50 MB

Single files under 50 MB can be directly up-/ and downloaded via the RDMS web interface.

Data Safety and Integrity

Compared to other UG storage solutions, the RDMS archive, is unique as it provides you with different means to check the integrity of the stored data.

This section will explain the key concepts in the RDMS related to long-term storage and how you can verify your data's integrity your self.
In short, the key concepts are:

Permissions and Inheritance

With the current version of iRODS, ten levels of permissions on data and metadata are available to the user. These permissions are either automatically assigned when a file or folder enters the RDMS, or they can be defined by the user(s). In an order of ascending privileges, these permissions are 'Null', 'Read_Metadata', 'Read_Object', 'Create_Metadata', 'Modify_Metadata', 'Delete_Metadata', 'Create_Object', 'Modify_Object', 'Delete_Object', and 'Own'.
Sharing Files and Folders

General Concept of Sharing within the RDMS

From your RDMS Home Folder

Files stored in your Home folder are by default only accessible to the owner, but it is possible to share folders/files with other RDMS users.

To allow another user to see and download a file/folder, the owner has to assign at least 'read' permissions to that object.

In the RDMS we use these concepts about data storage:

	* Personal area: In the RDMS, you have by default your own, personal data storage space. In the web portal, your personal RDMS Home Drive is marked as My folder.
	* Group/shared area
