The European Environment for Scientific Software Installations (EESSI, pronounced as “easy”) is a collaboration between different European partners (including RUG) in the HPC community. The goal of this project is to build a common stack of scientific software installations for HPC systems and beyond, including laptops, personal workstations and cloud infrastructure.

Installation of extra applications or libraries

Applications

If you want to use an application that is not installed as module yet, there are usually two options: either we can install it as a new module, or you can try to install it yourself into one of your own directories. The first allows other users to make use of the software as well, while the latter has the advantage that you keep control over the software and can easily change, update or delete the software.

Software environment

On Hábrók a lot of software has been made available using the EasyBuild software installation framework. In order to allow multiple versions of software to be available the software is arranged in so-called modules.

By default, only the main modules for getting access to the software stack are loaded: these are named

Python is one of the most widely used programming languages in scientific computing, and it is well supported on Hábrók. This page describes the recommended way to use Python on the cluster, from loading the right Python version, to managing packages and environments, to running Python jobs and working interactively.

Advanced: Toolchains

Short version

Do not mix up toolchain versions (2021b vs 2022a) or toolchain names (foss vs intel). It will load incompatible versions of compilers/libraries, and will most likely break applications.

This is very easy to do if you rely on default modules since these change depending on what the newest installed version is. Software is sometimes not updated synchronously, so you may run into an issue where loading defaults for
