====== About the RDMS ======
The proper management of research data is getting more important. On the one hand, there is the ambition of the UG and research funders to adhere to the different facets of the  [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_science|Open science]] framework and the [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FAIR_data|FAIR data principles]]. On the other hand, there are also concerns about the rules and regulations that the [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_Data_Protection_Regulation|GDPR]] brings, and there are now more ways to reuse data sets if that dataset can be found and may be reused.

The current storage solutions (X/Y drive, [[https://unishare.nl/|Unishare]], Google Drive, NAS) do not sufficiently meet the current data management systems standards.

With the RDMS we aim to fulfill the requirements that modern data management brings.

**Current RDMS functionality (August 2023):**
  * A centralized storage system for research data, hosted on UG premises.
  * A safe solution for managing and archiving files.
  * The  option  to  add  metadata  to  files  and  collections  and  folders  for  increased searchability and findability.
  * Ability to implement automated data policie. 
  * Sharing data with scientists within the UG.
  * Collecting, sharing and re-using data in [[rdms:solution:team|teams]] and [[rdms:solution:projects|projects]].
  * Secure storage of the data on various levels depending on the vulnerability of the data.
  * Different ways to transfer data to and from the RDMS for [[rdms:access:windows|Windows]] and [[rdms:access:mac:|Mac]] for a flexible selection depending on the user demands. 
  * A connection to the HPC clusters [[rdms:access:hpc|Hábrók]] and Snellius as well as the [[rdms:access:lwp:|Linux Workspace (LWP)]] for easy data transfer via command line.

Moreover, we are continuously working on the RDMS to increase the user experience and add new functionalities. 

**Important new features that are in progress:**
  * Possibility to collaborate with external users.
  * Possibility to publish data that is archived in the RDMS.
  * Improvements for the project archiving workflow.

==== Who should use this Wiki ====

This document is mainly targeted towards the end-users. Actions such as connecting to and interacting with the RDMS, uploading and downloading data, working with metadata, adding or removing collaborators, are the main topics explained in this user manual.
